Russia has sent a delegation to Hong Kong to learn from the world’s biggest cargo terminal, Hactl’s SuperTerminal 1, which accommodates around 70% of the airfreight moved at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

The delegation, comprising a number of government authorities, airlines and airports from Russia, visited SuperTerminal 1 – the major air cargo handler at the world’s largest air cargo hub - as part of a fact-finding mission to explore the latest developments and best practices in air cargo processing.

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) operates the USD 1 billion SuperTerminal 1 which covers an area of 390,943 square metre and is capable of handling up to 3.5 million tonnes of freight per annum.

The mission included 25 delegates from Russia’s ministry of transport, federal customs service, federal agency for the development of state border facilities, federal air transport agency of the Russian federation and other state agencies, as well as Aeroflot, AirBridgeCargo, Volga-Dnepr, Tolmachevo Airport and STS Logistics.

The visit to Hactl’s SuperTerminal and HKIA was designed for the Russian delegation to view the best practice in e-freight implementation. The visit was organised by Russian company ‘Innovation Center of Civil Aviation’ (ICCA) – a co-ordinator of the Pilot Project of e-Freight implementation in Russia.

Delegates also investigated the airport’s layout, its role within the local airfreight community, cargo infrastructure needs, competition in ground handling, and how Hong Kong accommodates inter-modal traffic.

Hactl’s managing director (MD), Mr. Mark Whitehead, added: “We are flattered that our friends from Russia spent so much time looking at the Hactl operation, and we hope that this visit has given them a clearer insight into the most effective ways of developing their air cargo infrastructure so that Russia can play an integral role in the global industry.”
